Nanjing City Wall Research Institute and Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital were founded on October 18, 2016 under the high attention paid by Nanjing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. Miao Ruilin, the Mayor of Nanjing People’s Government sent a letter of congratulation on the founding of Nanjing City Wall Research Institute and Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital and highly appreciated the protection and inheritance of Nanjing City Wall. He said Nanjing City Wall was “a Cultural Landmark Coming out from”; in recent years, laws and regulations system for protection of city walls have been continuously improved; City wall repair and preservation and surrounding environment improvement have made steady headway; the construction of cultural, leisure, tourism green ecologic zones around the City Wall has been accelerated; the preservation force and opening level have been continuously improved. He hopes that Nanjing City Wall Research Institute and Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital will more deeply promote the preservation and inheritance of cultural heritage by taking this founding meeting as a new starting point to make this cultural heritage-Nanjing City Wall go to the world and fully show the world the unique charm of the famous historic and cultural city-Nanjing. 

Diao Renchang, the Director of Nanjing Culture, Radio, Television and Press Publication Bureau and the Secretary of Party Committee conducted the meeting and prepared the preparatory work report on the Nanjing City Wall Research Institute and Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital. Articles of Association of Nanjing City Wall Research Institute were adopted at the general meeting through deliberation and the members of the Council of Nanjing City Wall Research Institute were elected.
        Wang Jianhua, elected Chairman of the Council of Nanjing City Wall Research Institute said: people of all circles get together and establish Nanjing City Wall Research Institute for the same ambition and objective of researching and preserving Nanjing City Wall; it is good for Nanjing City Wall and it is also a grant event for the construction of Nanjing Culture. Since the establishment of the Nanjing City Wall Research Institute, we will draw on the wisdom of the masses, fully mobilize and integrate the strengths of different circles, continuously improve the quality and level of scientific preservation and utilization of Nanjing City Wall and pool the wisdom and efforts of everyone in order to highlight the historical value, cultural charm and tourism resources of Nanjing City Wall.
        Xu Jinwan, newly elected President of the Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital said: Nanjing is a city with history and future; its nature color is humanity green, its treasure is landscape, city and forest and Nanjing City Wall is the card of the city and the symbol of hometown. The establishment of Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital is an important measure for implementing the Action Plan for Preservation, Renovation and Application for List of World Heritage for Nanjing City Wall promulgated by the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, and also an important grasp on preserving, publicize and utilize the City Wall well to add inexhaustible source to the City Wall preservation. The Foundation will be highly responsible for and make steady efforts to work steadily, positively take actions to establish a public platform with social responsibilities, social image and social acts to facilitate the sustainable development of the City Wall preservation undertaking.
He Dejian, the Director of Nanjing Civil Affairs Bureau delivered the plaque to Nanjing City Wall Research Institute and Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital. 

Professor He Yun’ao engaged in the preservation and application for the list of world heritage for Nanjing City Wall, as the representative of members of Nanjing City Wall Research Institute made a statement: although Nanjing City Wall lies in Nanjing, its historical meaning, modern value and future position do not belong to Nanjing, but to the world and the globe. Nanjing City Wall is the symbol and carrier of civilization and it is of profound significance for the research on typicality and characteristics of Chinese civilization and the comparison between the oriental and western civilizations. Under the leadership of the Council and the joint efforts of members, the Institute will deeply excavate the culture of the City Wall, explore the city civilization and make its own contribution to the cultural diversity under the background of the new era.

Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital has been supported by many benevolent enterprises of the society, and Xiang Xi, the representative of the Council Members of the Foundation and Vice President of Jiangsu Provincial Branch of the Bank of China said: the establishment of Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital is to inherit Chinese history, carry forward Chinese traditional virtue, and joining in the Foundation is to guard the cultural heritage and undertake the social responsibilities. Nanjing City Wall is the witness of long history and the symbol of history and culture. The Council will continuously support and pay attention to the preservation for Nanjing City Wall and make contribution to constructing the Nanjing City Wall with historical and cultural meaning, help to apply for the list of world heritage and show the world the great creation and bright culture of Chinese nation.

Foundation for Protection of City Wall of Nanjing Ancient Capital will build up the connection with government, scholars and citizens, explore a path of preservation participated in by all citizens, Nanjing City Wall Research Institute will deeply excavate the cultural meaning of Nanjing City Wall, further improve the level of theoretical research on Nanjing City Wall so as to provide a wider academic research and communication platform for the application of the list of world heritage for Nanjing City Wall.

In recent years, based on the strategic arrangement of Nanjing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, large-scale comprehensive environment improvement has been carried out to for Nanjing City Wall establish all-dimensional preservation system, activate the cultural heritages around citizens. Today, people can not only visit beautiful scenery of Nanjing by climbing the City Wall, but also read and have a rest in the space within it; can not only participate in different public cultural activities by day, but also appreciate beautiful urban landscape lighting at night.
        All are the achievements of preservation and utilization of Nanjing City Wall. The establishment of the Research Institute and the Foundation symbolizes the preservation of Nanjing City Wall entering a new stage from a government-dominated single mode to the model of multi-support from all walks of life to jointly devote themselves to the preservation and research on Nanjing City Wall.
